Use copy that makes website visitors feel seen

If you want to hook your readers, it should be all about them. You don't go on a first date and talk all about yourself, do you? So how do you make it all about them? It's creating the right sentences. You can mean the same thing, but say it differently. Let's have a look.

Talk about how you solve your client's problem.

Let's look at two sentences that say the same thing but in different ways:

  1. We create amazing, tailored marketing plans for every business.

  2. Let us help you create a marketing plan for your business that helps you achieve your goals.

What's the difference?

In the first sentence, we are the heroes. We are here to save your day. But nobody cares when all you do is talk about yourself. They want to know what's in it for them. They want to be the centre of attention, not you.

In the second sentence, your client is the main subject. They are the centre of attention. You're talking about the problems they're facing and the solution they need from you.

Nobody cares about how great you are.

I'd hate to break it to you, but nobody cares about how great you are. Not if you're telling them that. They care about proof. So instead of writing about how great you are, show it to potential clients through social proof: reviews, testimonials, your portfolio, etc.

That's more believable. We can all say we're amazing at our craft.

So while you show them how good you are at your craft, use your website copy to make them feel seen and heard. Let's do another example:

  1. We create websites that get people's attention and keep them reading.

  2. Expect a website for your business that gets your ideal client's attention and leaves them wanting more.

Once again, the difference between the two sentences is that the second one focuses on your clients and the issues they're facing in their business. While also providing a solution of course.

Write more you-sentences, and less we-sentences.

What's the main message here? It's that you should use the word "you" a lot more than "we" or "I" in your website copy. Make it a habit to convert sentences or paragraphs that have a lot of words like "I", "we", and "our" into words like "you" and "your".

Use copywriting to make your website visitors feel seen.

Your website copy should make new website visitors feel seen, heard, and understood. Identify the problems your potential clients are facing and talk about that. Talk about the solutions to their problems. Use storytelling to make them imagine their lives with those solutions of yours. And use simple language to keep them engaged.

Do you need help with that? Send me a message and let’s get started.
