You can say the same thing, yet change the entire meaning of your message through punctuation. Let's have a look at a couple examples.
Proper use of the comma is crucial.
A proper use of the comma is crucial for the right message. Look at this:
Wrong: I want to thank my parents, Olivia and God.
Correct: I want to thank my parents, Olivia, and God.
Unless your parents are named Olivia and God, the first one is incorrect. Would people get it? Probably. Does it look better if it's correct? Definitely.
Here's a combination of the colon [:] and the comma that changes the meaning of a sentence completely:
Sentence 1: A woman without her man is nothing.
Sentence 2: A woman: without her, man is nothing.
Same words, but with different punctuation, the sentence has a completely different meaning.
The exclamation mark vs. the period/full stop.
You can scream everything! And make us think you're super excited! But too many exclamation marks is not okay!
So how about you soften your tone. And make our heart rate go down a bit again.
That's the difference between using an exclamation mark [!] versus a period/full stop [.].
The ellipsis has benefits, but beware.
Make us wanting more...
But not too many times...
Because it gets annoying...
The ellipsis [...] has benefits. But if you overuse it, it becomes extremely annoying. And it just looks unprofessional.
